Mrs. Gigiano

Dear Parents and Students,

Monday - Friday

Before/After School or 8:55-9:25 A.M.

Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

Hi! My name is Mrs. Gigiano, and I will be your child's sixth grade teacher this year at Carl Sandburg Middle School. I am so excited that you will be in my class this year! I can't wait to meet you and start our year together. I know you are going to enjoy sixth grade.

About Me

I have been in the district for 19 years. This year I will be teaching Social Studies and Language Arts. So you will see me three times per day. I have a wonderful husband and two wonderful kids. Over the summer we swam quite a bit and shared some memorable experiences. I also sponsor NJHS here at Sandburg. I am excited about the new LA/SS block and look forward to a great year with your child.

Our Classroom

Our classroom is a very busy place to learn. The best tip I can give you for success is to find an organizational system that works for you. You may not find it at first, but keep with it and do not give up.

Our classroom environment is structured by a variety of hands-on learning activities, research projects, speaking and listening activities, and interacting with text. We also have our new Chromebooks that the students just received.  They are able to use their google account on any computer at home!

Communication is essential so you can visit google calander for general information, homework, and upcoming tests. Your child should also have an up to date assignment notebook. Lastly, please check Powerschool with your child to view current grades.  Grades are updated every 2 weeks.

Please feel free to contact me at school by email or call me at school (847) 949-2707. I welcome your thoughts and am looking forward to working together to make sixth grade a successful year!

Classroom Behavior Plan

I typically use the 1,2,3 method that many of you may have used when your child was growing up. If there are any inappropriate behaviors displayed I will be sure to contact you and we can work through the consequences. Otherwise, I simply follow the plan listed in the student handbook.

SS/LA Block Practice

Each day students will be recording their homework in their assignment notebooks. Homework you can always count on:

  1. read 125 pages per week
  2. Stem word study with a test on Wednesdays.
  1. If they don’t finish during the day, they are expected to finish it at home.  Most work should be

              finished in class.

Here is a look at our curriculum:

  1. Develop an understanding of how mankind developed its social systems, governments, and economies from prehistoric to the beginning of modern history.
  2. Discuss the contributions of ancient societies, both non-western, to the development of our modern world.
  3. Develop a variety of learning and organizational strategies
  4. Develop writing and research skills

  1. Stem word vocabulary
  2. Bellringers
  3. Annotating Article of the Week - keeping up with the world around us
  4. Interpreting primary source documents
  5. Connecting Ancient History with the world today through literature
  6. Using technology to communicate with each other, the school, community, and hopefully around the world
  7. Creating prose of all kinds (reflections, memoirs, argumentative essay, fictional stories, poetry, reading responses, book talks and more)
  8. Independently reading every day and reflecting on it using multiple reading strategies
  9. Improving research skills
  10. Writer’s Notebook
  11. Interactive Notebook
