At Carl Sandburg, we have integrated the English Language Arts and the Social Studies curriculums. Social studies will introduce students to the study of American History from the 1865 - present day. In English Language Arts, we will cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Eighth Grade Social Studies

  1. Develop an understanding of how major events in US History (from Reconstruction to the present) have affected the present world
  2. Discuss how the contributions of past US historical figures and policies have contributed to the development of our modern world.
  3. Examine current events and analyze the connections with themes from the past in US history
  4. Develop a variety of learning and organizational strategies
  5. Develop writing and research skills through an inquiry-based and thematic approach to studying history
  6. Study US geography and make connections to its impact on US history and government policies

Eighth Grade Language Arts

  1. Stem word vocabulary
  2. Grammar
  3. Interpreting primary source documents
  4. Connecting US History with the world today through literature
  5. Participating in Socratic Seminars
  6. Using technology to communicate with each other, the school, community, and beyond
  7. Creating prose of all kinds (reflections, memoirs, argumentative essay, fictional stories, poetry, reading responses, book talks and more)
  8. Independently reading every day and reflecting on it using multiple reading strategies
  9. Improving research skills
  10. Analyzing various literature, poetry, and non-fiction readings
About Me:
This is my 15th year of teaching, spending 12 of them here at Carl Sandburg. I have experience teaching all grades sixth through twelfth, except for ninth. I earned a Master's Degree (MSI: Secondary Education- English) from Northeastern Illinois University in 2012. I love spending time with my family, reading, and running.
